Beneteau Flag flies high at RMYC Marzamemi Weekend
date:
11-05-2007
Beneteau First 47.7 "Allegra" dominates the first offshore race on Malta's racing calendar.
The Gewiss Marzamemi weekend regatta, organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club, was held between the 28th April and 1st May 2007. This event is intended for a wide spectrum of boats, from comfortable family cruising yachts, to all-out carbon fibre racing machines. A total of 40 boats participated, all separated into respective classes.
The event consisted of two passage races, each about 55 nautical miles long. The first day of racing saw 15 to 18 knots of breeze with a moderate swell. The course consisted of the start outside the Royal Malta Yacht Club, a short beat out of Marsamxetto harbour, followed by a fetch across the Sicily channel to the finishing line laid just ouside the sicilian harbour of Marzamemi. The first boats crossed the line shortly after 16:00, after just over 7 hours of racing. IRC 1 and Overall honours went to Allegra, a Beneteau First 47.7 sailed by Alfred Manduca and his crew. Elusive, a Beneteau First 45f5 skippered by Arthur Podesta also won first place in IRC 2.
After 2 days in sicily, the return trip provided for more tactical decisions, with the wind shifting along the course and changing wind strengths throughout the day. Once again the lead boats began crossing the finish line after 7 hours of racing, with Sonke Stein's Ker 11.3 "Kerisma" taking line honours. It was "Allegra" however, who would once again take class and overall honours. Proudly flying the Beneteau flag. In a repeat performance from race 1, Elusive also placed first in IRC 2, closely followed by Puddleduck (Dufour 44), Maltese Falcon II (Beneteau First 40.7) and Primavera (Beneteau First 45f5)
