Another great Beneteau Weekend
date:
01-12-2008
The weekend of the 29/30 November saw 28 Beneteau owners, their families and friends enjoying a fun filled weekend of good racing.
At the start of last week, the weather forecast was not looking too good for the weekend and the adverse conditions on Thursday which plagued Mgarr Harbour forced the Race Committe to abandon the overnight stay in Gozo and to finish the Saturday race in Marsamxetto. On Friday the weather forecast improved and seemed to promise a fun filled weekend of wind and sunshine.
Saturday's race saw the fleet head up to the North Comino channel on a close fetch in a W 15 to 20 knots, and after a short beat in choppy seas, saw a return leg to Marsamxetto which was fast to say the least. One could see that those boats with assymetric spinnakers up were easily hitting double digit figures. After the racing most gathered at La Rive in Sliema to enjoy a drink or two
On Sunday the wind backed to a SW 15 -20. From Marsamxetto the fleet sailed to the St. Paul's Tuna pens leaving them to port, and then rounding Comino to starboard to head back to the finish, once again leaving the pens to port. In this course the key was to find clear wind due to the similar waterline length of the majority of the fleet and in the South Comino channel, the Malta side proved to be the favoured side of the course due to the calmer seas. The final beat into the finish from Tigne point to the breakwater of the Grand Hotel Excelsior saw many boats swap positions.
The prize giving ceremony was held in the Ballroom Foyer at the Grand Hotel Exclesior.
The race committee would like to thank Medcomms and the Grand Hotel Excelsior for their continued support, the principal race officer David Farrugia and Teddy Borg from Starboard Productions for covering the event.
